Help the students of Dipodog Elementary School combat hunger by starting a community food farm.

Maras, Sindangan, Zamboanga Del Norte

Hunger, Productivity, Food Sufficiency, Quality Education

Dipodog Elementary School is situated in Sitio Dipodog, a small community in Barangay Maras, Zamboanga del Norte. This community is known for being the most difficult place to reach in the barangay because of its mountainous terrain. It is far from the highway and inaccessible by any vehicle. Despite the challenging conditions of having to walk on steep, mountainous terrain for two hours and cross a wide river, the teachers remain passionate and committed to their students. They continue to persevere and push through these obstacles to ensure that their students receive the education they deserve. Their dedication and selflessness serve as inspiration.

Dipodog Elementary School opened its doors in 2005 and has been providing education services to the locals for 19 years. The school currently has 67 enrolled students. The primary source of income for the community is farming, which is not enough to sustain many families. Consequently, many parents have to seek jobs in the nearby city, forcing their children to move with them and resulting in a significant number of students dropping out of school or transferring to schools near their parents' workplaces. Moreover, many students lack basic school supplies such as pencils, paper, crayons, ballpoint pens, shoes, and bags. Wearing uniforms is also uncommon, and some students wear the same clothes repeatedly due to financial scarcity. Some parents rely on financial aid from the 4Ps program, while others cannot afford to provide their children with food, and some students come to school feeling lethargic because they haven't eaten anything. All these factors have contributed to the decrease in the number of enrolled students compared to the previous school year.

Poverty and hunger are some of the factors that cause students to stop schooling. The teachers are worried for their students that only a few will be able to finish their studies in elementary because some of them prioritize helping their parents earn money to fill their hungry stomachs. The educator’s passionate dedication to nurturing their students' minds is not enough to fill their minds to pursue and finish their studies.

The teachers aim to help their students nurture their minds and bodies; they like to establish a community food farm in the school to provide nutritious food that nourishes their students' health and will support their daily feeding activities in the future. The community food farm will also provide the parents of the students with educational guidance that will teach them new techniques for planting and taking care of their crops in innovative ways. They may use these novel concepts to collect and sell more harvested crops. Through this, their income may increase.
