Barangay New Katipunan is one of the 24 barangays of Maragusan, a municipality in the province of Davao de Oro, formerly known as Compostela Valley. It is located in the northeastern part of the municipality, about 10 kilometres away from the town centre. According to the 2020 Census, it has a population of 1,662 people. Davao City is relatively far away from Barangay New Katipunan. The travel time from the city to the barrio takes roughly 4 to 5 hours.

GK Lil Baguio is in Barangay New Katipunan, a remote and mountainous area in the southern part of the country. GK Lil Baguio was formed in December 2007. The community consists of about 100 families who used to live in informal settlements and are vulnerable to natural disasters and armed conflict. The settlement of RIDO is a testament to the effectiveness of cooperation initiatives and the commitment of the Bangsamoro government to promote a united and harmonious society.

The community has a multipurpose centre that serves as a venue for various activities, such as meetings, training sessions, workshops, celebrations, and other events. The centre also has a library, a computer room, a kitchen, and a storage room. It is a valuable asset for the community as it offers opportunities for learning, empowerment, and social cohesion.

However, the community experiences significant difficulties in obtaining dependable and affordable electricity. The community's multipurpose centre is supplied with electricity by diesel generators and electricity borrowed from nearby homes. These sources are not only costly and unsustainable, but they are also unreliable and inadequate. Power outages and voltage fluctuations are common in the community, causing damage to appliances and equipment. In addition, a lack of proper illumination restricts their operations to daylight and raises safety and security problems at night.

To address this particular matter, the community proposes to install a 1 KW, 12-hour off-grid solar system to power its multi-purpose centre. This system will supply the community with a clean, sustainable, and self-sufficient source of energy that will cover their basic requirements while also assisting them in meeting their development goals. The approach will also help them minimize their reliance on fossil fuels and lessen their carbon impact.
