Sultan Sa Barongis, Maguindanao

Health, Feeding Program, Anti-Hunger Program

Sultan Sa Barongis is a second-class municipality in the province of Maguindanao, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). It has a population of 32,075 as of 2015 census. The indigenous inhabitants of Sultan Sa Barongis are the Maguindanaon and Iranun. Some of them lived in other parts of Maguidanao province. They are known for their distinct languages, customs, beliefs, and traditions that reflect their Islamic faith and political heritage. They are also well-known in farming, fishing, metalworking, weaving, and music.

Lambayong was the former name of Sultan sa Barongis until it was named to honour Sultan Kudarat, a local hero who fought against the Spanish colonists in the 17th century. Sultan Kudarat was also the grandfather of Sultan Sa Barongis, the founder and first ruler of the municipality. The Sultan Kudarat Monument is a historical landmark that was erected in 2017 to commemorate the 400th death anniversary of Sultan Kudarat. It is located at the town plaza features a bronze statue of Sultan Kudarat riding a horse and wielding a kris (sword). The statue symbolizes the bravery and leadership of Sultan Kudarat and his descendants. One of the most well-known events in the province is the Kalilang Festival. It depicts Sultan Sa Barongis' culture and heritage. It is celebrated in March to commemorate the municipality's foundation anniversary and to honour its patron saint, Saint Joseph. The celebration includes street dancing, cultural exhibits, trade fairs, athletic competitions, and religious ceremonies.

Despite the town's rich traditions and diverse cultures, hunger and malnutrition remain serious problems that affect the citizens of Sultan Sa Barongis, particularly children. According to a 2019 report by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), it has the highest prevalence of underweight (low weight for age) among children under five years old in the region, with 16.8%. Underweight is a sign of acute malnutrition, which can impair the growth and development of children. The causes of hunger and malnutrition are complex and interrelated. Some of the factors include poverty, food insecurity, poor sanitation and hygiene, lack of access to health care and education, and natural disasters. The COVID-19 pandemic has also worsened the situation by disrupting the livelihoods and food supply chains of many families.

Hunger, especially among children, is a significant roadblock that the poor have to overcome on a daily basis. Through Kusina ng Kalinga (Care Kitchens), we build caring communities for our young. It is where lunchboxes or plates don’t just contain meals, but also carry the commitment to care together until no child is left hungry. This bayanihan effort is powered by Kusina ng Kalinga (KnK), Gawad Kalinga’s anti-hunger program.

This fundraising effort aims to build a feeding program to provide the local children with healthier meals and lower the rate of malnutrition. Community members will work together in managing their community kitchen, preparing meals, and monitoring their progress to ensure the continuous development of the children’s health. You can make a difference in the lives of 300 kids in Sultan Sa Barongis, by supporting this effort. Your kindheartedness will significantly give them hope.
