Polomolok, South Cotabato

Health, Feeding Program, Anti-Hunger Program

Polomolok is a first-class municipality in South Cotabato, Soccsksargen, Philippines. It has a population of 152,589 as of the 2015 census. The Ilonggo and Blaan peoples are the majority inhabitants of this barangay; some live in other parts of South Cotabato. Their tribes have distinct languages, customs, beliefs, and traditions that reflect their Christian faith and agricultural heritage. They are known for their farming, weaving, pottery, and music skills.
Polomolok is one of the historical places in the country; it is the site that marked the end of World War II in Mindanao. On September 2, 1945, General Tomoyuki Yamashita, the commander of the Japanese forces in the Philippines, surrendered to General Jonathan Wainwright, the commander of the Allied forces in the Pacific, at the Kiamba-Polomolok Road near Barangay Cannery Site. Media representatives and dignitaries from both domestic and foreign countries witnessed the event.

The town offers a glimpse of the beauty and diversity of South Cotabato and Mindanao. Throughout history, it has witnessed many challenges and opportunities for progress and peace in a region. A place that ought to be discovered and loved by more people. The Polomolok Pineapple Plantation is one of the natural attractions in the region that features vast fields of pineapple crops covering an area of 12,000 hectares. It is owned and operated by Dole Philippines, Inc., one of the largest producers and exporters of fresh and processed fruits in the Philippines. The plantation also offers a tour for visitors who want to learn more about the pineapple industry and enjoy the scenic views. The region is home to several well-known locations and activities. The Flomlok Festival, an annual celebration that honours Polomolok's culture and heritage, is one of the known festivals. It is celebrated every September. The event is conducted to commemorate the municipality's foundation anniversary and to honour patron Saint Lorenzo Ruiz. The festival includes events like street dancing, cultural exhibitions, commerce fairs, sports tournaments, and religious ceremonies.

Despite the town's scenic views, rich traditions, and diverse cultures, hunger and malnutrition remain serious problems that affect the citizens of Polomolok, particularly children. According to a 2018 report by the Department of Health (DOH), Polomolok has the highest prevalence of stunting (low height for age) among children under five years old in the region, standing at 40.9%. Stunting is a sign of chronic malnutrition that can impair the physical and mental development of children. The causes of hunger and malnutrition are complex and interrelated. Some of the factors include poverty, food insecurity, poor sanitation and hygiene, lack of access to health care and education, and natural disasters. The COVID-19 pandemic has also worsened the situation by disrupting the livelihoods and food supply chains of many families.

Hunger, especially among children, is a significant roadblock that the poor have to overcome on a daily basis. Through Kusina ng Kalinga (Care Kitchens), we build caring communities for our young. It is where lunchboxes or plates don’t just contain meals, but also carry the commitment to care together until no child is left hungry. This bayanihan effort is powered by Kusina ng Kalinga (KnK), Gawad Kalinga’s anti-hunger program.

This project aims to build a feeding program to provide the local children with healthier meals and lower the rate of malnutrition. Community members will work together in managing their community kitchen, preparing meals, and monitoring their progress to ensure the continuous development of the children’s health. You can make a difference in the lives of 300 kids in Polomolok, by supporting this effort. Your kindheartedness will significantly give them hope.
