Minis is a small island in the barangay of Latih, municipality of Patikul, province of Sulu, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Philippines.
In 2017, the Philippine Marines undertook a risky rescue operation on Minis Island. The mission aimed to release two Indonesian captives taken by the terrorist group Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), which is active in Sulu and other areas of Mindanao. A small group of Marines undertook a covert operation as part of the mission, infiltrating the island and engaging the ASG in combat. Without any losses, the captives were successfully released from the insurgent organization.
Minis Island is a long way from Zamboanga City; therefore, traveling requires effort and time. From Zamboanga Port, you may board a ferry headed to Jolo from Zamboanga City. The travel time is around six hours. Then, at Jolo Port, you will board a different ferry headed to Patikul; the trip takes about an hour. Minis Island is accessible by boat from Patikul Town. It takes roughly 30 minutes to get there.
This small community is home to 30 families in a secluded neighbourhood in Sulu. Since the community is on a small island, locals depend on the rain as their primary water source. They also get their drinking water from the rain. The dry season is quite challenging for the residents since they must preserve the rainwater they collect until the monsoon arrives. They occasionally use seawater for some household chores. Obtaining water from the subsequent town is difficult and costly; they must ride a boat, which costs PHP 1400 for a round trip. Some locals cannot afford the high cost of transportation, which is why they rely on rainfall because it is free and much easier to obtain. Rainwater catchment basins are not a reliable source of clean water because they can be contaminated by various pollutants such as dust, dirt, animal droppings, insects, bacteria, and chemicals. These contaminants can cause waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea, typhoid, cholera, and dysentery. These diseases can affect the health and well-being of families, especially children, who are more vulnerable to dehydration and malnutrition.
The local team cannot help but be concerned for the health of the residents, especially the children and elderly. That is why they proposed to install a Water Filtration System. It will filter out unwanted chemical compounds, organic and inorganic materials, and biological contaminants from water. The water filtration will provide clean and safe drinking water to the villagers of Minis, especially the children.
This fundraising effort aims to gather resources to acquire water bucket filters to ensure safe drinking water for 30 families on Minis Island. One of the essential modifications required is to guarantee the safety of the water for consumption. This can be achieved if we work together to provide them with safe drinking water through water filtration.
You can make a difference in the lives of 30 families on Minis Island in Barangay Latih, Patikul Sulu, by supporting this effort. Your kindheartedness will significantly give them hope.
